ADA releases guideline on gum disease treatment

CHICAGO, Ill., USA: Dentists treating patients with chronic periodontitis are advised to use scaling and root planing (SRP) as initial treatment, according to new guidelines from the American Dental Association. The guidelines, based on a systematic review and meta-analysis of treatment of periodontitis, were published in the July issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA).

Study: Alcohol consumption can have negative impact on gum health

CHICAGO, Ill., USA: In a recent study in the Journal of Periodontology, researchers have found that consumption of alcoholic beverages can have adverse effects on the health of a person’s gums, aggravating existing cases of severe periodontal disease or increasing periodontal disease risk factors. Moreover, previous research indicates that poor oral hygiene is a common trait in alcohol users, thus increasing drinkers’ susceptibility for developing periodontal disease.
